Synergy in Actions: the resilience of arts organizations and their strategic approaches
Upon the advent of its 25th anniversary, the Association of the Visual Arts in Taiwan (AVAT) has organized an international forum, titled “Synergy in Actions: The Resilience of Arts Organizations and Their Strategic Approaches.” This initiative aims to examine the developmental contexts of non-profit visual arts organizations worldwide, reevaluate the position of their counterparts in Taiwan, and reestablish international collaboration opportunities among the arts organizations in the post-pandemic era, seeking to further the overall development of the arts ecology.

“Synergy in Actions” is a five-year project. In its first phase, the project will focus on the fostering collaboration and exchange within Asian regions before extending the network to engage with non-profit arts organizations in Europe and North America. Through substantial exchange, the project explores the following agenda:

     (1) Understanding developmental trajectories and operational experiences in diverse environments and cultural backgrounds;

     (2) Exploring the public objectives and values of arts organizations;
     (3) Identifying commonalities and collaboration opportunities across different countries’ experiences.

In the 1st edition of the forum in 2024, AVAT invites Tiara Afriani, the Operational Manager at Cemeti – Institute for Art and Society (Yogyakarta, Indonesia), and Ji Yoon Yang, the CEO of Alternative Space LOOP (Seoul, Korea), to share their experiences and engage in dialogue with Taiwan’s arts organizations. “Synergy in Actions” will be divided into a public forum and a closed-door meeting over a course of two days. Mandarin-English interpretation will be available.

In the public forum, based on three stages – “construction, growth, and innovation,” Cemeti - Institute for Art and Society, Alternative Space LOOP, and AVAT, each established over 25 years ago, will share their developmental journeys, discuss the keys and challenges facing arts organizations in each stage, as well as their coping strategies concerning future developments. Marta Trotsiuk, the President of the Ukrainian Gallerists Association, who has extensive experience interacting with Asian arts organizations, is invited to be the observer and will respond with her observations and insights gained in the forum.

About Organizer

The Association of the Visual Arts in Taiwan (AVAT), also known as the Visual Arts Alliance, is an intermediary non-profit organization founded in 1999 with the main goal of supporting the art community.

Over the years, AVAT has endeavored to develop and integrate existing resources in the visual arts environment, supervise the government’s cultural policy, support/plan visual art and innovative projects, and organize/offer different professions by offering professional counsel to individuals, groups, and organizations. AVAT also fosters artistic engagement and art education to encourage artistic exchange and dialogue by organizing exhibitions, talks, international exchange programs, community and art education, and establishing databases and archives.

As one of the long-established non-profit visual arts organizations in Taiwan, AVAT has actively sought and facilitated opportunities to collaborate with visual arts organizations worldwide. The exchange programs in recent years have incorporated new creative approaches, tools, mediums, and practices to extensively explore the diverse and interactive reality of international exchange and collaboration. The ceaseless effort has allowed AVAT to develop unique vocabularies that represent Taiwan’s contemporary art context and expand Taiwan’s impact on the global art scene. AVAT hopes to create more collaboration opportunities and introduce international resources to Taiwan’s art community by studying the operational models of arts organizations in different regions.

Introduction of the Invited Groups

Cemeti – Institute for Arts and Society is the oldest platform for contemporary art in Indonesia, founded in 1988 in Yogyakarta as a site for exchange and providing space for artists to showcase their work. In 1995, the Cemeti Art Foundation (Yayasan Rumah Seni Cemeti) was established (which has been operating independently since 2007 as the Indonesian Visual Art Archive, IVAA), becoming the first organization to begin documenting contemporary visual art in Indonesia. - LOOP opened its doors in 1999 in the Hongdae area of Seoul as Korea’s first ‘alternative space,’ with the firm belief that contemporary arts and culture have inherent, fundamental roles within an open civil society. To further solidarity, access, and sharing in art, LOOP has supported and promoted experimental artists who have built up particular aesthetics and practices that address contemporary social issues; shared current international artistic movements with the public via exchanges with artists from diverse locations; and focused on the point(s) at which the social, cultural, and artistic issues proposed by artists intersect and meet with the audience.
